Intercessory Prayer Ministry |
The ministry of the intercessor is a ministry that serves to
support the leadership of the RLF.
The ministry of the
intercessor is to come before God on behalf of another until
their request is answered. It is standing in the gap, between
God and the object of prayer, until victory is accomplished. It
is the act of pleading by one, who in God’s sight has the right
to do so on
behalf of another, to obtain mercy and help in their
time of need.
A God called intercessor is an invaluable addition to any
pastor’s or person’s ministry. Their feedback and insight should
be welcomed at the highest level of leadership. A mature group
of intercessors are from the Lord.
The primary responsibility of the intercessors is to pray into
existence the vision, plans, and purposes of the ministry as
given through the “Set Man,” or senior pastor. They are to
assist and pray for pastoral leadership and others on the front
lines of the ministry. It is the express responsibility of the
intercessors to pray with a mind to strategic-level intercession
and spiritual warfare against principalities and powers that are
arrayed against the vision of the church as handed down by the
senior pastor. It is also expected that the intercessors pray
consistently for church growth, spiritually and numerically, the
salvation of souls, and the effective discipleship of those
souls into Christian maturity, emotionally, psychologically, and
spiritually. It is expected of the intercessors to pray for
unity and connection between the members of the local body as
well as the body at large. The church, indeed every Christian,
is a combination of a self-sacrificing saint and a self serving
sinner. The ministry of intercession is given by the Holy Spirit
to facilitate and enhance the sanctification of the believer to
efficiently manifest the fruit and gifts of the Holy Spirit to
the edification of the body. The ministry is given to empower
the church to overcome the flesh and enter effectively into the
work of the ministry and dissemination of the gospel.
The preaching of the gospel is one of the most important aspects
of Christian ministry. Therefore,
it is expected that the chief
intercessor would have specific members of the group assigned to
praying especially and specifically for the minister in the
pulpit who is expounding the word at any given time. Worship is
also an integral part of preparing the people’s hearts for the
reception of the word. In addition, the intercessors should
consistently pray for the head of the worship ministry and those
involved with bringing forth praise and worship.
Since some pastors and leaders have had negative experiences
with the ministry of intercession,
it is important to draw some
clear parameters as to what the intercessor is not. The
intercessor is not a spokesperson from God to the congregation
or particular members of the church unless otherwise designated
by the pastorate. The intercessor is not to speak to persons on
behalf of
God or the leadership without first clearing it
through the pastorate. He/she is not to approach individuals in
the body regarding their personal opinions, or revelations in
prayer, as to what God is doing in the body, ministry, personal
lives, circumstances, etc., of others. The ministry of
intercession is not a congregational ministry in the sense that
the intercessor goes before God in secret that their request may
be rewarded openly. (Matthew 6:6)
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when
thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret;
and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
The intercessor may have the gift of prophecy that is exercised
in the general body. He/she may exercise that gift in the
general congregation . But the gift of prophecy is for
edification, exhortation, and comfort and not for reproof or
rebuke of the congregation.
1 Cor. 14:3
But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and
exhortation, and comfort.
It is the job of those with the gift of prophecy to cheer, stir,
and build-up the body through the prophecies that they give. It
is the calling of a prophet, or governmental ministry; apostle,
pastor, elder or presbyter to reprove and rebuke, not the
intercessor. The intercessor is a co-laborer, not
a determiner
of the sovereign will of God. The prayer of the intercessor is
always to be aligned with the will of the leadership. If the
leadership has missed God, the prayer will not be answered and
the fervent effectual prayer of the righteous will prevail in
any cause or situation dealing with God’s people, purposes, or
kingdom. It is not the responsibility of the Ministry of
Intercession, as a group, to pray for the individual problems of
the leadership. This cannot result in a positive experience, in
that it creates doubt in less mature saints as to the
qualifications, abilities, or even suitability of an officer of
the church. It is the job of the Church Council and the
Congregation, not the intercessor, to officially or unofficially
decide the suitability or unsuitability of a ministry officer or
candidate. This does not restrict the freedom of individuals to
pray for concerns regarding the church among trusted and proven
co-laborers. The co-laborers should be mature enough to do so
without a negative impact on the church or the ministry of the
leaders for whom they are praying. None of us are perfect, and
we all need prayer. The wise solicit prayer.
The ministry of the intercessor is indispensable to the Body of
Christ. We are pleased to have such a ministry operating in our
church body. However, it is necessary for the ministry to abide
within the prescribed parameters in order to maintain Biblical
order, unity, peace, and health among our congregants. We look
to this ministry, through effectual prayer according to the will
of the Almighty God, to forge our way to the fulfillment of His
will.
